I know almost everyone has a holiday TV and movie ritual. There are Christmas movies that some of us need to watch during the holidays. This could include Christmas classics such as Alone at home Or Santa. Usually it includes at least one of best Christmas movies of all time. You don’t feel this joyous season without watching these films. I have plenty of must-watch TV shows and movies from December to January.
Some people start their holiday viewing traditions in November. Personally, it’s a little too early for me. Once December rolls around, I speed it up by watching some of my favorite holiday movies. Of course, this includes some great romantic Christmas movies and those who were essential to my childhood during the holidays.
Let’s discuss the movies and TV shows that make the holidays truly special.
A Christmas story
As I get older I can kind of see that A Christmas story is not the most perfect film of all time. There are problems. However, nothing will stop it from being one of my favorite films. It’s probably because it’s the film I’ve seen the most in my life. I never get tired of it. A Christmas story is that classic story where you really want something and everyone is denying it to you.
You finally understand, and spoiler alert, you gouge your eyes out. What a classic metaphor for life. I don’t think there’s ever been a Christmas since I remember Christmas I didn’t watch A Christmas story. I really appreciated A Christmas Story Christmas but I’m not sure it has earned its place in my Christmas tradition yet. I might watch it again from time to time, but I’m not sure I’ll still watch it in 30 years. I will definitely continue watching A Christmas story several decades into the future.
While you were sleeping
There are many holiday romantic comedies that I love. I know some things about Love in fact hasn’t aged well, but I still see it during the holidays. My holiday movie tradition often includes holiday romantic comedies that I watch occasionally, but While you were sleeping has recently become a must-see Christmas movie. I always loved the movie. However, it wasn’t until I became an adult that I began to incorporate it into my vacation habits.
Sandra Bullock is my favorite romantic comedy heroine and this film best exemplifies her on-screen charm. Plus, the movie world has failed us by not making Bill Pullman the romantic lead in more films. This film corrects that mistake. While you were sleeping be a shoot taking place in Chicago also adds to its particularity.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas is also one of those films that I’ve seen a million times and would watch a billion more. I don’t watch it every Christmas but I try to watch it almost every Christmas (or Halloween).
It’s just a heartwarming film that is also very well made. It’s a film that I appreciate more as I get older because I notice new elements. I find new things to admire, especially when it comes to The Nightmare Before Christmastechnical precision.
A version of a Christmas carol
There is a lot of great Christmas song moviesso I have a lot of options. Scrooged This happens to be one of my favorite versions of the story. That’s why I watch it often. However, I also enjoy watching new versions of Charles Dickens’ tale. And I love watching my childhood favorites, like A Flintstones Christmas Carol. Recently I even added another layer to my Christmas song annual habit by listening to an audiobook production of it.
The story never gets old. Therefore, if the world continues to create versions of this story, I will continue to watch (or listen to) them.
It’s a wonderful life
Maybe I’m remembering wrong, but it seemed like every year, It’s a wonderful life used to ventilate after Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. This would mean the holiday season had begun. If I didn’t watch It’s a wonderful life, the holiday season would not officially begin. This still rings somewhat true.
A vacation doesn’t really seem complete without at least one viewing of It’s a wonderful life.
An unconventional Christmas movie
This is a more recent viewing tradition that began in adulthood. I love all the wonderful, happy Christmas movies. However, I have to watch at least one unconventional Christmas movie. For some, that might mean an action movie like Die hard Or Batman returns. To me, that means some sort of holiday horror movie. Some of my favorites are Gremlins And Better be careful. I usually watch at least one of my favorite holiday horror movies or a new one every year.
This year I’ve already crossed this off my holiday movie list with It’s a wonderful knife. However, I could always go for more holiday horror, which probably means a few more holiday horror movies before January.
A classic of modeling clay
I like to believe I have Classic Playdough Holiday Movies playing in the background at Christmas is a universal childhood thing for millennials and Generation X. This includes Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is coming to town, Jack Frost, and many other popular claymation Christmas movies. I’m a little too old to still benefit from their magic. However, I usually watch at least one of these movies (if not several) during the holidays, just for nostalgia and to remember the years without bills.
A new Christmas movie
Netflix, Hallmark, Lifetime and now Peacock, Prime Video and other streaming services and networks are jumping into the annual Christmas movie market. Many of my favorite Christmas and holiday movies are childhood related. However, I’m always looking for a new addition to my TV shows and holiday movie rotation.
This means that if a new Christmas or holiday movie seems interesting, I watch it. I’ve enjoyed some of the new holiday movies I’ve watched over the past few years. However, I haven’t found any permanent ones yet, but I appreciate the search.
A Holiday Cooking or Baking Series
Cooking holiday meals is now part of my new tradition. Therefore, I like to watch holiday cooking shows for inspiration. Plus, I just enjoy the simplicity of cooking and baking programs. Max has a large catalog of this type of programming. Therefore, I don’t have a specific holiday cooking or baking show that I watch every year, but just see what looks interesting on Max, Netflix, and similar streaming platforms.
Much of the magic of Christmas and other holidays is the traditions. For me, as for many others, a lot of this has to do with Christmas movies. I just don’t fully immerse myself in the season without watching the shows and movies mentioned above. I look forward to these annual holiday movie and TV marathons.
