As Hollywood Actors Tackle AI Problems, Matrix Actor Opens Up About What Happened to Him: ‘I’m an Eyewitness’
While awaiting the official vote of its members, it appears that the WGA strike is finally coming to an end. However, even if that happens, Hollywood still won’t be able to get back to work, as the SAF-AFTRA strike is still ongoing. Some stars, like Jessica Chastain, have been able to continue working through interim deals, and others, like Matrix Franchise co-star Lambert Wilson are not based in the United States and therefore are not subject to the strike. But Wilson says he stands with his American counterparts because he understands more than just some of the issues.

I am 100 percent on their side (the SAG strikers). I am also a member of SAG, but since I do not reside in the United States, I am exempt from striking, but on the last night of the festival I plan to show solidarity with my colleagues. I think this fight is crucial for our future. We are now manipulated as artists and spectators. They hide the essentials from us, they don’t tell us who the real audience is, how they “sell” us or what we really earn for them. Regarding artificial intelligence, I am an eyewitness to it.
Certainly as an actor who played a role in The matrix films that were actually artificial intelligence, one would think that Lambert Wilson might have a unique perspective on the subject, which is at the heart of what the WGA and SAG-AFTRA fought against in their strikes. When they made the Matrix video game, Enter the Matrix, they had me do all kinds of expressions for a day to capture and reproduce using motion capture techniques, and then another day to record as many words as possible to make my avatar perfect. What will happen to this other me? He could happily declare war, using my face and my voice. And here we are talking about 20 years ago. I therefore stand alongside my American colleagues. I believe they are fighting a battle of civilization, after which nothing will ever be the same. The winner will decide many things, not only about cinema but also about our future.
How AI can be used in conjunction with motion capture technology has been a specific topic during the current strike. Although it has been used in video games for years, the technology has only become more realistic. Studios expressed interest in paying background actors a one-time fee to capture their likeness, which would be used in future projects at the studio’s discretion. This is just one of many complex questions that have been debated and discussed as AI becomes more capable of recreating the work of people.
We don’t yet know how the AI issue was resolved in the tentative agreement for the WGA, but attention will now turn to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which shares many of the same concerns over to the impact that AI could have on their jobs.
