bharat ratna: Dimple, other SP netas seek Bharat Ratna for Mulayam Singh Yadav

0 30

A day after the government announced that Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav would be conferred the Padma Vibhushan (posthumously), some SP leaders demanded that the leader be awarded no less than the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in the country.

“I believe he should get the Bharat Ratna and, in fact, he should have already been conferred with such a title,” Dimple Yadav, SP MP and daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav, told media persons on Thursday.

She said the party will appeal to the government for the Bharat Ratna to be awarded to Yadav. Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award in the country.

SP MLC Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently triggered a political row by calling the Ramcharitmanas “casteist” and demanding deletions of some sections from the text, said conferring the SP patriarch with a Padma Vibhushan posthumously was “making a mockery” of his stature, achievements and contribution towards the country. He said if an award were to be given to Yadav, it should be no less than the Bharat Ratna.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav did not comment on his father being awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

IP Singh, another senior leader of the SP, had written a letter to President Droupadi Murmu in October, soon after Yadav’s demise, requesting her to announce the Bharat Ratna for him, citing his contributions to social justice.

Following Yadav’s death, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have publicly expressed their respect for the SP patriarch, who went out of his way to comment in the Lok Sabha \Parliament in the run-up to the 2019 general election that he wished to see Modi as the PM once again. It serves the BJP well to acknowledge Yadav’s stature owing to his role in the state’s backward politics and his sway over the Yadav community. The award only adds to the BJP’s efforts to portray a pro-backward image, especially with the general election just a year away. In this backdrop, criticism from some quarters of the SP over the issue can also be seen as a means to defend the party’s electoral turf.
