Carlos Nazario Joins Harper’s Bazaar as Style Director at Large – WWD

0 21

Carlos Nazario has been tapped as style director at large for Harper’s Bazaar. The newly created role will have Nazario styling most Bazaar covers; his first will be the Hearst-owned magazine’s February 2024 edition.

His editorial work, especially with photographer Tyler Mitchell, has centered around models of color. He has styled numerous Black celebrities including Lizzo (in a memorable red Valentino ruffle dress), Naomi Campbell (in Dior couture) and Beyoncé (in an elaborate floral headdress) for American Vogue; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Vanity Fair, Solange for T and Rihanna for Garage. He has worked as a consultant for numerous fashion brands including Lanvin, Burberry, Ambush, Zara, Nike, Hood by Air, Michael Kors and Canadian outerwear label Moose Knuckles.

Nazario will remain as global fashion director of i-D magazine, which was recently purchased by model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss, who previously led a consortium of investors to purchase W magazine, where Nazario once worked as an intern.

“I’ve long admired Carlos’ work,” Bazaar editor in chief Samira Nasr said in a statement. “He speaks to now in his approach to creating fashion imagery and the community he has built perfectly aligns with the modern and distinct vision we have for this iconic brand.”

Added Nazario: “I am so excited to be joining Samira and the team at Harper’s Bazaar. The brand has such a long and illustrious history of documenting the most exciting, heartfelt, inspiring and beautiful stories happening in our global culture. I can’t wait to be able to contribute to the canon of iconic images that the magazine has produced.”

Nazario comes to Bazaar in the wake of a contributing editorship at Vogue. (In a 2021 interview with New York Magazine’s The Cut, he revealed some frustration within the confines of Vogue. “Some of my Vogue stories I  haven’t been stoked about,” he said.)

His is not the only new face at Bazaar. Brooke Bobb, previously senior content editor at Amazon Fashion and a veteran of Vogue and T, in September joined Bazaar as fashion news director.
