Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat on Tuesday lashed out at the BJP-led central government, accusing it of betraying farmers and denying them their rights. Karat’s remarks came on a day thousands of farmers called for a ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest, as the national capital turned into a virtual fortress with authorities preventing them from entering the city.

“The Narendra Modi government has not only denied the rights of farmers and workers, but has also betrayed them. Why did they (the Centre) say no to the law to guarantee the minimum support price (MSP) for crops? ” he says.

Karat was in Ranchi to participate in a party state committee meeting.

The CPI(M) leader also said that the central government was late in announcing the Bharat Ratna for eminent agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan.

“Swaminathan stood for the rights of farmers, but his formula to help them was not implemented by the Centre,” he said.

Karat also claimed that farmers across the country are calling the assurances given by the prime minister as “farce and fraud”. “Farmers across India will observe ‘Gramin Bandh’ on February 16. This is the great struggle of the working class,” he added. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have announced that farmers will head to Delhi on Tuesday to press for their demands, including the enactment of a law to guarantee an MSP for crops .

Apart from a legal guarantee for MSP, the farmers are also demanding implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, farm loan waiver and withdrawal of police cases.
