Centre gave Bharat Ratna to Chaudhary Charan Singh, but doing ‘injustice’ to farmers: Jairam Ramesh

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on Tuesday that the Center had honored Chaudhary Charan Singh, who championed the cause of farmers, and agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan with the Bharat Ratna but was doing “unfair justice” to farmers. His remarks came against the backdrop of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march call given by thousands of farmers demanding a minimum support price (MSP) law and the national capital being turned into a virtual fortress where they are being held back. of the authorities entered the city.

Addressing a press conference at Chhattsigarh’s Surguja district headquarters Ambikapur on the Congress’ ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, Ramesh also targeted Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar for association with BJP and called him “Palti Kumar” ( one who does somersault).

Notably, security in Delhi has been stepped up with multi-layer barricades, concrete blocks, steel nails and container walls at border points to stop the ‘Delhi Chalo’ farmers’ march. on entering the national capital on Tuesday, after talks between farm leaders and the Center remained inconclusive.

Ramesh said, “Some time ago, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Bharat Ratna (the country’s highest civilian honour) for the great farmer leader Charan Singh and the ‘father of green’ revolution’ Swaminathan posthumously and we accept the decision.”

“But the government, which announced the prestigious honor for the two legends, is doing injustice to the farmers,” he said.

Farmers staged protests in support of three-four demands that the Modi government had promised to fulfill when it rolled back the three ‘black’ farm laws, Ramesh said. He said that the farmers were demanding a minimum support price law and that the MSP should be fixed at 1.5 times the production cost of crops, according to the Swaminathan formula. The third demand of the farmers is loan waiver. The Modi government has waived loans worth Rs 14 lakh crore of “chandadata” (donors) but not the Rs 1 lakh crore loan of “annadata” (referring to farmers), claimed Ramesh.

In 2008, the then Congress government at the Center had waived farmers’ loans of Rs 72,000 crore, he said.

The Modi government is not fulfilling the assurance given to the farmers, which reflects its purpose, he said.

The Congress stands with the farmers and supports them, he added.

Asked about some parties coming out of INDIA’s opposition alliance, which was formed to counter the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Ramesh said, “There are 28 parties and only two are left. Out of the two, one is ‘Palti Kumar’ (referring to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar). ‘Palti’ (political somersault) is in his blood, he has repeatedly voted face.”

“We don’t expect anything other than volte face. The other is the RLD (Rashtriya Lok Dal) which has taken other decisions after the Bharat Ratna announcement for Chaudhary Charan Singh. Only two parties are left. There are 26 party and the alliance is strong,” he said.

Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar was also present at the press conference.
