Gabrielle Marshall: Mother speaks out after Colin William Drake pleads guilty to murder
A grandmother has shared her grief over losing her daughter in a random attack two years ago – as her child’s killer has finally pleaded guilty to the shocking murder.
Gabrielle Marshall, 23, was found dead at a friend’s house on Main Street in Ulverstone, in Tasmania’s north-west, at 3am on June 15, 2021.
Colin William Drake, 37, who did not know Ms Marshall, was found in a house on the same street where she was living, and he was arrested the same day and charged with murder.
He initially pleaded not guilty to murder but changed his plea to guilty last month.
Ms Marshall’s mother Heidi said her daughter had grand plans for a new life in Tasmania, including buying a house and going skiing with her baby.

Ms Marshall, who had a daughter of her own, had moved interstate from Queensland just three weeks earlier to start a new life.
She had returned from a date on the night of June 15 to a friend’s house, where she had been staying since leaving.
Her friend called the police at midnight to report a man ‘roaming’ inside her house.
She was on the phone to emergency services for 11 minutes but when officers arrived they found Ms Marshall had been stabbed to death in a room.
Ms Marshall was the youngest of six children, described by her mother as ‘beautiful inside and out’ and with a big heart.
‘This has completely destroyed my family. It is really very difficult. The pain is constant,’ Heidi said.

It is understood that Ms Marshall’s friend and her friend’s children witnessed the murder. At that time his own daughter was only six years old.
Heidi is now planning to travel to Tasmania for Drake’s sentencing hearing on October 23.

Drake has been remanded in custody before appearing in the Supreme Court of Tasmania next month.
