Harry and Meghan Netflix series: Former palace aides comment on Diana comparisons in trailer

Former palace aides are reportedly growing frustrated by their inability to respond to claims being made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their Netflix series, which begins streaming tonight.

“This is all narrative,” The Telegraph in the UK reports one aide saying about scenes in the trailers for Harry & Meghan.

The aides have taken offence to footage showing the glowing press coverage Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received throughout the royal wedding in 2018.

In a voiceover, Harry then states: “Everything changed.”

The remainder of the trailer chronicles the couple’s struggles with negative press coverage and being chased by paparazzi.

One palace aide took particular offence at comparisons being made between Meghan Markle and Princess Diana.

“What was so bad that it warrants making a comparison with Princess Diana?” one told the publication.

“They seem to be equating her death with a few negative stories and gossip.”

The trailers include footage of Princess Diana being pursued by paparazzi – attention the former Princess of Wales endured for 16 years, from the time her engagement to then-Prince Charles was announced in 1981 until her death in a Paris car crash in 1997.

“If they’re saying they have to flee the UK because of how they were treated, they’ve got to get specific,” one aide said.

“But they won’t, because there’s nothing there.

“This is pure narrative. It’s outrageous, it’s lazy and they can’t be allowed to get away with it any more. It’s as if the facts no longer matter at all.”

One staffer concludes the Sussexes’ dissatisfaction had more to do with the negative stories about Meghan’s alleged mistreatment of palace staff and subsequent resignations that followed.

The British royal family has declined to directly comment on Harry and Meghan’s claims with current staff also restricted from defending the monarchy.

Some former staff have spoken out ahead of the release of the first three episodes of the Netflix docuseries Meghan & Harry tonight at 7pm.

The series is expected to further discuss the couple’s claims of racism and mental health struggles first mentioned in their sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.

The trailers have come under fire for using images of paparazzi out of context, with images of groups of photographers at a Harry Potter premiere and waiting for British celebrity Katie Price used.

“No one knows the full truth. We know the full truth,” the prince says in the trailer.

Over an image of the royal family at Buckingham Palace, he adds: “There’s a hierarchy of the family. There’s leaking, but there’s also planting of stories. It’s a dirty game.”

When footage of his mother, the late-Princess Diana, is shown, Harry he says: “I was terrified. I didn’t want history to repeat itself.”

Meghan adds: “I realised, they’re never going to protect you.”

While Princess Diana’s car was being chased by paparazzi at the time of the Paris car crash in 1997, the incident has since been attributed to driver Henri Paul being well over the legal blood alcohol limit at the time.

Diana died alongside Paul and Dodi Fayed. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, the only occupant of the vehicle who had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was the only survivor.
