windows 11 update
Microsoft’s updated Paint app for Windows 11 will allow people to create images by just typing a few words.
Microsoft said it will start releasing the next major update for Windows 11 on September 26.
The update will include the new Copilot in the Bing search engine and Edge web browser, and people will be able to summon Copilot by pressing the Windows key and pressing the C key.
Aaron Woodman, vice president of Windows marketing at Microsoft, said that bringing Copilot to the operating system would be important because it would make AI accessible to people who may not have worked with it before. Woodman said, “I think what we’ve seen so far is inside a tech bubble,” while “Windows is a product that reaches a significant portion of the planet.”
Some of the key features of the new version are:
- Boot to the cloud. If you’re running a cloud-based version of Windows, you’ll be able to log directly into the cloud as your primary experience on your PC, Microsoft said.
- Clever sarcasm. With Windows it is becoming easier to extract text directly from screenshots. When using the Snipping Tool app, you can copy text from a screenshot and modify emails or phone numbers instantly.
- Better backup. Microsoft will enable users to backup pre-installed apps on a PC to restore them, along with pinned app preferences, in the future.
- Paint with words. The long-running Paint app is being revamped with the help of Generative AI. People will be able to type a few words of text, choose a style, and Paint will automatically generate an image matching the description. It is similar to the tool from Adobe and other companies as well as Microsoft’s own image builder in the Bing search engine.
- More taskbar customization. Windows 11 introduces a brand new taskbar that places the Start button and a series of app icons at the bottom center of the screen. Users can now see app icons with labels, just like the way things looked in Windows 10. Even apps that aren’t running may appear with labels. Users will also be able to hide the time and date.
- Notepad with memory. Notepad will automatically save your position so that if you close the note-taking app and open it again, you can immediately get back to your work.
Testers have gained access to some of these features in early builds in recent months.
