What Karan said
When Karan was asked what was the idea behind Rocky Aur Rani. Karan said, “I remember an incident in my family where one of my family members was suffering from dementia and he had returned to his past love. The only problem was that he was a married man and he kept taking the name of this lady who also happened to be a member of his family… It was a scandal and the truth is appeared that he was in fact having an affair. It was only that he was talking about the relationship at the age of 80 and the woman he was having an affair with was 84 at that time. And his wife is 79 years old. There was drama in and around this situation…and I remember that instead of feeling bad about what was happening between these three people at an average age of 82… I was like wow!’”
Karan talks about infidelity
Karan added, “For me, I’m so obsessed with infidelity. I made a film about it and I remember someone said to me, ‘Why do you approve of infidelity?’ and I’m like, “You can’t approve of something that’s already worn out! On an emotional level, I’m always intrigued by the idea of infidelity and how it can become a reality. What is it? . There is no age for love.” The film he is referring to here is Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan.
In Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Kanwal (Dharmendra), who suffers from dementia, keeps repeating Jamini’s name. It is then revealed that the name belongs to another woman he met long ago at a poetry meeting and fell in love with. When this truth comes out, Kanwal’s wife, played by Jaya Bachchan, is scandalized. Jamini is played by Shabana Azmi. Kanwal and Jamini reunite thanks to the efforts of their grandchildren, played by Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
