King Charles’ plane surrounded by fighter jets on arrival in Germany for state visit with Camilla Queen Consort

The official plane carrying King Charles III and the Queen Consort was surrounded by fighter jets as it made its descent into Germany on Wednesday.

The appearance of the two military aircraft, on each wing, took many on board by surprise.

Royal correspondents and photographers on board the King’s plane expressed their shock as the jets came into view from the windows of the King’s RAF Voyager.

”So there I was quietly looking forward to a cup of coffee and a couple of episodes of Ted Lasso Season Two (yes I’m behind) when I looked out my window to see a German Eurofighter Typhoon jet escorting us into Berlin for the start of today’s state visit – a very cool surprise my son will love,” Getty royal photographer Chris Jackson shared on Instagram.

CNN’s royal correspondent Max Foster posted a similar photo on Twitter saying: “Fighter jets accompanying King Charles on state visit to Germany… Haven’t seen this before on a royal flight”.

The German Typhoons was part of the King’s official welcome and not a sign of alarm.

Soon after landing at the Berlin Brandenburg government airport, the King and Queen Consort were greeted with a 21-gun salute fired from nearby field guns as two military aircraft performed a flypast.

The military welcome was a sign of how much importance Germany has put on the King’s three-day tour, the first state visit since becoming monarch in September after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

After landing, their motorcade was driven to the Brandenburg Gate, where the King and Queen were met by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elka Büdenbender.

King Charles was the first foreign head of state since the Second World War to be welcomed to Germany with full ceremonial and military honours at the capital’s iconic gate.

The King and Queen Consort then stood for the national anthems and and inspected the guard of honour, before separating to meet the crowds who had waited to see the couple.

The crowd was limited to just 1500 by the German police, keen to ensure nothing got out of control, but it was filled with people waving both Union Jacks and the German flag.

Germany was meant to be the second stop on King Charles’ first overseas tour as monarch but his three days in France were postponed due to ongoing riots following Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms.

When it came time to signing the official guest book at the presidential palace, King Charles produced his own pen, possibly to avoid a repeat of his irritable outbursts soon after the Queen’s death in September.

That’s despite the German officials being well prepared, with Kai Baldow, head of protocol in the president’s office, insisting: “Our pen has never failed”.

King Charles and the Queen Consort ended their first day in Berlin with a state banquet at the Bellevue Palace, with Camilla wearing some of the late Queen’s diamonds for the first time.

On Thursday, King Charles will become the first British monarch to address Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, and will speak in both English and German.

He will then visit a reception centre for Ukrainian refugees at the former Tegel airport on the outskirts of Berlin and watch a joint German-British engineer battalion, the first combined military unit between the two countries in more than two centuries, lay a B pontoon bridge over the Oder-Havel canal north of Berlin.

The Queen Consort will visit the Komische Oper opera house.

The royal couple will then visit Hamburg, the final stop on their three-day visit.
