meghalaya: Assam-Meghalaya border dispute: Government of India will conduct CBI inquiry, says Amit Shah

Following firing by the Assam Police that left five civilians of Meghalaya and an Assam forest guard dead in West Jaintia Hills district, Union Home minister, Amit Shah assured the Meghalaya ministers delegation government of India will conduct CBI inquiry into the incident.

Tuesday’s clash between Assam Police and civilians near a village along the border with Meghalaya that left six people dead and several injured, On Friday most of the State government offices and shops in Shillong were shut down in view of the “non-cooperation day” called by the five pressure groups–Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) and Jaintia Students’ Union called the non cooperation to protest against the Mukroh shooting incident on November 22.

Meghalaya cabinet delegation led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday and pointed out that the root cause of the incident is the disputed interstate borders. Meghalaya government has sought a probe by the CBI or NIA.

Spokesperson, ministry of Home Affairs tweeted, “Meghalaya CM @SangmaConrad met Union Home & Co-op Minister @AmitShah today and requested CBI enquiry into the unfortunate incident on Assam- Meghalaya border. Govt of Assam has also requested CBI enquiry into the matter. HM @AmitShah has assured that GOI will conduct CBI enquiry”.
In Shillong on Friday there was thin attendance of government employees. Pressure groups members had fanned out in some offices and asked the offices to shut down.

Meanwhile an Inspector of Customs and Central Excise, Alok Kumar, who was here in Shillong for undertaking training in National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN), was attacked by a mob in Shillong on Thursday. Kumar’s hearing aid was snatched. He was admitted to a hospital.

Sangma met the chairperson of NHRC. In a series of tweets, he stated, “Gave a detailed account of the firing incident that claimed 6 lives at Mukroh to Hon’ble Justice Arun Kumar Mishra Ji, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission and other members of the NHRC with Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong.”

He added, “Informed the Chairperson and the members that the Mukroh incident was a clear violation of human rights. Apprised them about the actions that have been taken like the Central Agency enquiry into the matter”.

Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union (APMU) which on Thursday decided not to ply in Meghalaya has taken back its decision following assurance of security from the state government. APMU had sent letters to all PSU oil marketing companies, including IOC, HPCL and BPCL, informing them about its decision to not load fuel in tankers on Thursday. Security has been beefed up across the state.
