Rethinking palettes, textiles and insights AW23 Castart

In a white well-behaved museum a child-like painting that combines different shapes, a remarkable colour- palette and a handwriting resembling the graffiti-kind tends to stand out. In the European social setting right after World War II, art was believed to be either highly civil or highly abstract, but always well reasoned and far out of reach for “ordinary” citizens. For quite some time in history, art came with an in-depth manual. The CoBrA movement (1948-1951) launched in Brussels but shortly after united with Amsterdam and Copenhagen, made no effort to draw within the lines of that manual. Their works were experimental, colourful but most importantly spontaneous – and they were opposed to almost everything art was about at that time. Yet the most striking part about the Cobra-movement was perhaps their playful take on the act of creating: there was a great interest in the process. Doubting yourself, trying things out, coming up with combinations, failing, looking from another perspective, and worst case: starting over again if the result is not as pleased. Although the latter was not very often the case, as there was such great admiration for the journey towards it.

We have always sourced support from creative pioneers. Rather naturally than rationally, we gaze at movements within art and select elements that we consider valuable. The childlike spontaneity of the cobra-movement has not only been an inspiration for the newest AW23 collection, we have kept the philosophy in mind when we marked the first foundations of our brand years ago. Besides the principles we want to stand for – ethically sourced production by suppliers that are familiar to us and comfortable, rich textures – we also just want it to be fun. To wear, to combine and to create. Our Sister seek to discover the true colours of open-minded, dynamic people. The same kind of open- mindedness that is needed to interpret the works of the cobra movement with a humoristic wink.

Acting on this philosophy, for the AW23 collection we spent some time rethinking the colours we use, and in which combination – and why not switch this up completely? Our team managed to redefine our core- palettes and cast them into new materials. The collection came to life by playing around with details: an accent of a fuzzy knit striking on wool, sleeves that turn out slightly different because of their tone, and our first, very personal jeans. For this collection, we revisited one of our fundamentals: rich textures, and thought about how to flip it around but still remain close to that value. We sought for the equal well- consideration of the cobra movement – but, of course, without missing out on the playful expressiveness. To honour the art movement, our team hand-drew a bunch of illustrations that we implemented on t- shirts.

As for the women, we play with a kimono-like top that we finesse in our own way – Asian sophistication meets French richness. Which could, in fact, serve as the unifying thread throughout the collection: a re- imagination of styles, colours and materials in order to achieve a new outcome. –
