Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has no intention of returning to west London when his loan at Inter Milan ends this summer, according to reports.

Lukaku re-joined Inter Milan for a season-long loan after his club-record £97.5m move to Chelsea in August last year ended in disaster, with the Belgium international striker scoring just eight Premier League goals in 2021-22.

Lukaku fell out with ex-boss Thomas Tuchel and upset some of the club’s fans when he gave an interview last December expressing regret over his return to Stamford Bridge.

But Tuchel was dismissed this month and replaced with Graham Potter, with Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta admitting it could change Lukaku’s situation.

Fresh reports in Italy now indicate that Inter Milan, who do not have a buy option, will look to loan the 29-year-old once again for the 2023-24 season.

‘I think in one year everyone has forgotten about the things I am capable of doing on the pitch,’ Lukaku said last month.

‘I had the opportunity to go back [to Chelsea] and thought I would be a hero, but that wasn’t the case.’

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, who managed Lukaku at Inter Milan, also recently spoke about his former player.

‘Romelu lived two years in Milan [2019-2021] and he was the king,’ Conte said. ‘The fans showed him a lot of passion and I think he’s a guy who needs this.

‘And for this reason, I think he wanted to go back to Milan. But, for sure, the signing was a good signing for Chelsea.

‘You know very well there are players that need more time to make an impact. But, for sure, he was a good signing for Chelsea.

‘He has the potential to play in the Premier League. I remember very well when he started to play last season, he played really well and you in the media said Lukaku is really strong.

‘A lot of things can happen for the confidence to drop. Now it’s right for him to play for an important club in Italy to try to get again confidence in himself. But we are talking about a really important, a really good striker.’
