Hangzhou – Nearly 12 hours after winning silver in the women’s 100 metres, Singapore sprinter Shanti Perera was back at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium to secure her place in the 200 meters final.
The 27-year-old did just that and finished first in Heat 3 on Sunday in 23.12 seconds, which was also enough for him to become the fastest qualifier.
Bahrain’s Adiong Ofonim Odiong, who won three gold medals in 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay in 2018, was second fastest in the heats with a season’s best of 23.35 seconds.
Since the semi-finals were canceled due to withdrawals, the top two and next two fastest players from each heat qualified for Monday’s final.
Just a day earlier, Perera had ended the Republic’s 49-year wait for a medal in athletics at the Asian Games with her silver, capping what has been a stellar year for them.
