Simu Liu admits that not being able to promote Barbie during the strikes wasn’t very practical, but he’s ready to make up for it now
The actors’ strike began just as barbie, the biggest film of the year, was released in theaters. As a result, even though the actors who made the film had the opportunity to speak about it before its release, they all remained rather silent as the film became a monster. Simu Liu admits that it has been very difficult and he is clearly trying to make up for lost time.
After the official end of the strike, a a fan asked Simu Liu on Twitter about this little film he directed and titled barbie, something he hadn’t been able to talk about in recent months. Liu admitted that it was hard not to enjoy all the fun everyone was having, but he still loved seeing all the enthusiasm fans had for the film. Liu said…
It was an exercise in self-control not to respond to Ken’s endless horde of puns that I was exposed to during this four-month period. But yes; it was pretty cool.
The strike rules were quite strict. At one point, the SAG union expressed concern about Halloween costumes, which shows how seriously everything was taken. Even commenting on a funny joke would have been frowned upon. For what it’s worth, it seems like it was worth it, as the union seems pretty happy with the contract they were able to secure.
Ken’s puns were certainly hard for anyone to avoid after barbie became the biggest movie of the year, the kind of thing everyone had seen. Unfortunately for Liu, he was one of the few people unable to attend the party due to strike rules. He tried to make up for lost time by posting a gallery of photos and videos on Instagram to remind people that he was in this movie that a lot of people really liked.
This behind-the-scenes stuff is what we would expect to see while barbie was at the cinema. This would have been part of the promotional campaign to try to get people interested in the film. While it is very likely that many films suffered from their release during the strike, barbie either because he had already been part of a successful hype train, due to the Barbenheimer meme that swept the world, or simply because he was so good, he was able to become a huge success.
We hope that when and if there is a barbie sequel, the actors won’t need to stay so quiet. It has been suggested that some sort of Kencentric spin-off film could be considered. If that happens, there’s a good chance Simu Liu will return. He will then be able to enjoy all of Ken’s great puns in a way he couldn’t before.
