The last Singaporean to win gold in athletics was Chee Swee Lee (women’s 400 metres) in 1974. Before Perera’s silver, Singapore’s last Asian Games medal in the sport had also come in 1974.
In May, Perera became the first Singaporean woman to win both the 100 m and 200 m events at the same edition of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and followed that up with a sprint double at the Asian Athletics Championships in July.
She became the first Singaporean to reach the semi-finals of the World Championships after a stellar performance in the 200m in Budapest, Hungary last month. He also achieved the qualifying mark for the event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“I’m incredibly fortunate to be in this position,” Pereira told reporters Saturday. “And my work is not finished, there is still one more incident to go. I’m really excited and very excited.”
