A savvy single mum has shared her handy trick for scoring a huge haul of meat from Coles for just $37.

Gold Coast mum Jemma said she enjoyed a huge 73 per cent discount on her grocery shopping at the Aussie supermarket simply because she visited at the right time of day.

Sharing her savings to the popular Facebook group Markdown Addicts Australia, Jemma said she had popped to the shops for a “snack after work” when she stumbled across the discounted products.

“FINALLY it was my turn to score the cheap meat! It couldn’t have come at a better time for us” she captioned her happy post on the group page.

“Single mum, 2 kids. Currently in the process of looking for a new home, working and studying full-time. It’s going to be a huge help! I’m so happy.”

Jemma had purchased an entire trolley worth of meat, chicken, croissants and crumpets, with her total coming to just $37, a savings of $103.

Of the 16 items she bought were beef sausages marked down from $12 to just $1.95, a packet of crumpets for only 52c and a packet of chicken legs for only $1.97.

She also found steak for just $4.74, pork cutlets for $3.02 and crumbed chicken breast schnitzel for $1.62.

Several Facebook users questioned if Jemma had shopped at Coles late at night, when the meat is usually on sale. The budget shopper revealed she had walked into her local Coles in Southport Park at 3.45pm, just as the items were being marked down.

Special offers and “quick sales” usually vary from store to store in Australia, however it is widely believed that around 5pm or 6pm is the best time to score heavily discounted products at Coles.

Bakery items at Coles and Woolworths are usually marked down for the end-of-day clearance around 2-4pm. This can often include 50 per cent reductions on some day-old items.

Another shopper, Katy, took to Markdown Addicts Australia to show off her savings at Coles after finding $246.41 worth of meat for just $49.35.

Katy had visited her local supermarket at around 6.45pm, just as the Coles worker was marking down some of the expensive meat items.

“The guy marking it down and the manager were more than happy to see it gone, even hunting down other reduced meat to mark it down further for me!” she wrote.

“Myself and another lady definitely went in at the right time… $246.41 worth of meat for only $49.25.”

Among her discounted items were beef patties for $1.70, pork roast crackling for just 91c and a whole boneless chicken for $3.61.
