Newcastle striker Callum Wilson was left fuming with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after his side’s 4-1 loss on Sunday.

The Magpies were thrashed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thanks to goals from Destiny Udogie, Richarlison (two) and Son Heung-min, with Joelinton grabbing an injury time consolation.

The visitors were easily second-best, but there appeared to be some unpleasantries at the full-time whistle as Wilson confronted Vicario shortly after the keeper had saved a header from the England international.

Discussing the incident with Sky Sports post-match, the 31-year-old revealed that he took issue with his opponent’s conduct, saying: ‘There’s a way to win.

‘We saw it in the week where Everton were winning and [Jordan] Pickford was messing around.

The goalkeeper [Vicario], I’ve had a header, he starts pulling faces and messing around and it’s a lack of respect, I thought. I’ve said my peace, we’re grown men and we move on.’

Wilson refers to Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat at Everton on Thursday, where Pickford’s antics triggered a 13-man melee at the full-time whistle.

The result ends Spurs’ five-game win-less run and leaves the club fifth in the Premier League table after 16 games, seven points off leaders Liverpool.

Newcastle meanwhile stay seventh, seven points off the top four, with Eddie Howe’s depleted side now preparing for a crucial Champions League clash against AC Milan.

‘The players that have been starting the last five, six games have had a lot asked of them. Today just seemed one game too many,’ Wilson added.

‘We’re playing against a top side and unfortunately for all those travelling fans we couldn’t give them the three points we wanted.

‘Sometimes when you’re in games like today if you score the first goal you have something to hold onto and it gives you a little bit of momentum. Once you go 1-0 down, with what happened in the last two away games, it can play in the back of the mind.

There’s no excuses from our point of view, it wasn’t good enough today from everybody and we’ll make sure we’re right for the midweek game.

‘Tottenham are a good side, they scored a good first goal from their point of view. We couldn’t find that breakthrough and then when they get the second and third it’s a long way back.’
