Andreas Brehme, the scorer of the goal that won West Germany the 1990 World Cup against Argentina in Rome, has died at the age of 63. During a distinguished career which saw him earn 86 international caps, he also lifted the Bundesliga and the Serie A among other trophies. After he retired from professional football he began coaching, returning for a spell at his prior club, Kaiserslautern.
Brehme established himself as a formidable defender at the national and club level, often scoring his trademark long-distance shots. His death comes less than two months after that of Franz Beckenbauer, who coached West Germany to that 1990 triumph
