Anthony Joshua suggests reason why Tyson Fury fight broke down

Anthony Joshua is convinced he will still fight Tyson Fury after opening up on the failed negotiations that led to their Battle of Britain falling through again.
Fury offered Joshua a shot at his WBC heavyweight title in September, with the Olympian accepting a fight purse of 60-40 in the champion’s favour and his demand for the fight to take place on 3 December.
Despite negotiations between Matchroom and Queensberry appearing amicable, deadlines passed with no final deal in place with Fury instead switching focus to Derek Chisora, who he will meet for a third time on that date at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Joshua meanwhile had planned to return before the end of the year but latest comments from his promoter would suggest that plan has been delayed until early 2023.
Reflecting on the fight that never was, Joshua underlined his commitment to doing ‘good business’ when it comes to agreeing fights.
‘I was supposed to be in the ring on 3 December. That was the date but obviously that is not happening,’ Joshua said in an interview with DAZN.
‘But do you know what I do now? I have a great team. I’m someone who loves business, I love doing good business, good contracts etc. I have a good team and I have to leave certain things to them. All the other stuff, the back and forth on social media, it is quite time consuming.’
Fury bombarded Joshua will videos on social media as a deadline handed down by the champion approached in late September.
‘The Gypsy King’ declared talks ‘officially over’ in one such clip on 26 September, saying: ‘Idiot. Coward. S**t house. Body Builder. Always knew it. I always knew you didn’t have the minerals to fight the Gypsy King.
‘Regardless of what the f**k you say now, I don’t really care. Good luck with your career and your life. End of. Peace out.’
Joshua’s promoter Hearn took a dim view of Fury’s relentless social media activity while talks were ongoing. But the former world champion suggests that approach will always be part of Fury’s cultural make-up when it comes to making fights happen.
‘There is good and the bad, like anything,’ Joshua said of the social media clashes. ‘It is not annoying but you’ve got to play the game as well. My dance partner, the last geezer I was supposed to fight, he is a good dance partner. he handles social media and I think we do good business behind the scenes.’
He added: ‘It will happen, come on. We’re the same generation.
‘He is definitely a fighting man. And what people fail to realise when they say the social media side is annoying, culturally speaking, from Tyson Fury’s culture, the gypsy culture, you watch the documentaries on Netlfix and you see its embedded in the culture. What he has always seen around him.
‘I know from being around that community growing up that is just how they call out fights. It is nothing personal. But from my culture, we don’t really deal with things like that, we are a bit more low key and just handle our business So that is where there is a bit of culture clash.
‘But it is two fighting guys, aside from 10s of thousands of people coming out to an amazing stadium, he is a fighting man and regardless of who is watching, he just wants to fight and so do I.’
