Cost of living, housing affordability key issues for 9News readers

The cost of living and housing are the key concerns of 9News readers leading up to this weekend’s New South Wales election.

In an audience survey people were asked which issues are most likely to impact their vote when the state goes to the polls on March 25.

The price of essentials such as groceries, petrol and energy were a common concern among respondents, as was affordable housing.

Our audience were asked a number of questions including what the main factor influencing their vote is, which leader was better placed to tackle the cost of living crisis and what they’d like to see the winner of the election implement.

“The disparity between executives and directors versus average blue collar and frontline workers is ridiculous and this inequality must be addressed,” 9News reader Pat wrote.

“Trim the fat and build on our basic needs – pay our police, nurses, firemen, teachers etc fairly and well enough to attract the best and brightest our society has to offer.”

Connor was also concerned about teachers, calling for: “a reform for the teaching profession and their rights as teachers – stop overworking them to stop them from quitting the profession at a rapidly increasing rate.”

Jackson from Sefton said he’d like to see the cost of living go down, and “for a transport system to run on time and to do what it’s meant to do. Transport people.”

Other readers pointed to infrastructure such as the work on roads, tunnels and the second airport as a key deciding factor in their vote.

“Under the recent Liberal government NSW has made up so much ground with new roads finally happening, tunnels, airports and we didn’t have a hardline approach like Victoria did during the pandemic,” Steve said.

Andrew wrote he was hoping for: “continued investment in infrastructure, a strong economy and long term reforms that set up the future for my kids.”

“I have been a strong Liberal supporter my whole life but I found myself contemplating voting Labor this election due to the fact that I work in a club and the new pokie laws that are being brought in will drastically affect my work place and potentially put my job and career at risk,” Jackson said.

Tia wrote they would also support Labor as she believes the Minns government will ensure ”climate issues (are) prioritised over profits for corporate gargoyles.
