Summer is one of the best times to try out new beauty trends, and this year has seen no shortage of interesting looks to drool over. Between minimalist hairstyles like “quiet luxury” buns and manicures like “strawberry milk” nails, it’s only natural that the next makeup trend you’ll be seeing all over your social media feeds is equally low-key. Prepare to see “glossy eyelids” everywhere over the next few months and beyond.

On TikTok alone, the hashtag #glossyeyes has more than five million views and counting, and the hashtag #glossyeyelids has more than 38 million views. If that isn’t enough to convince you the look is trending, the thousands of users on the platform showcasing their own glossy eyeshadow looks should. Even celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Kim Kardashian, and Dua Lipa are fans of the trend.

So, what is it exactly? The best way to picture the look is to imagine smearing a clear lip gloss over your lids (in a respectable way, of course). Glossy eyeshadow takes “glazed doughnut” skin a step further, extending that shellac-like effect to your eyes. “The look is popular because it’s versatile,” Lyndsay Zavitz, celebrity makeup artist, tells POPSUGAR. “A glossy eye looks great over top of a smoky eye or even a natural look with no eyeshadow. Dewy skin is all the rage, so extending that to the eyes pulls the whole look together.”

How to Do the Glossy Eyeshadow Trend

Step 1: Prep the Lids With Concealer and Powder

Always prep the lids well, as that’s the first step to help prevent creasing. “Start by using a product like the Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longer Concealer ($33) all over the lid in one shade lighter than your foundation,” Zavitz says. From there, you’ll want to set the concealer with a translucent powder. “My favorite is the Dermablend Loose Setting Powder ($32),” she says. “Take a small fluffy eyeshadow brush, and lightly dust a tiny bit of the powder over the lid to set the concealer.”

Step 2: Apply a Cream Eyeshadow

If you’re looking for an intense look, Zavitz says she loves the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eyeshadows ($32) because they have a wide variety of colors and make a great base for a glossy eye. “You can use your fingers to smudge the eyeshadow, or you can use a small concealer brush to build the eyeshadow up,” she says. If your goal is something a little more minimal, she suggests using the Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk ($20). “This can be used as an eyeshadow, blush, and lip all in one.”

Step 3: Apply Eyeliner and Mascara

Although eyeliner isn’t necessary, if you plan to wear it, Zavitz suggests using a waterproof eyeliner to prevent smudging when you add the gloss over top. Her current favorite is the Lancôme Le Style Waterproof Eyeliner ($28).

For mascara, again, Zavitz suggests using something waterproof like the Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara ($13) to avoid any smudges.

Step 4: Add the Gloss

Zavitz’s favorite product to finish off the glossy eyelid look is the Kevyn Aucoin Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss, but it’s been discontinued. (Lucky you if you own it.) She says the next best thing is a clear lip gloss like the Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment ($16).

“Take your finger, and dab a small amount over the lid with a slight tapping motion,” Zavitz says. “You can also use a small eyeshadow brush to lightly blend the edges for a seamless look.” She suggests using as little of the product as possible to start, because the more you use, the more likely it will be to crease.

To finish everything off, Zavitz suggests adding a tiny bit of the gloss to the tip of your nose as well as your cheekbones to pull everything together.
