Mamata Banerjee: Mamata slams WB Guv over appointing VCs without consulting state government

The appointment of Vice-Chancellors without consulting the state government and Governor raising the issue of corruption became a flashpoint between the Governor and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with Banerjee criticizing Governor CV Ananda Bose on Wednesday and asked him to form a party. or contest elections with a BJP ticket. The bitterness between the two recalls the days of prolonged conflict between former Governor Jagdeeep Dhankhar and Banerjee.

“The work of the Governor is under the purview of the Constitution. He says what the Prime Minister has done, he also does. Then, you (Governor) better form a party and win the election or contest on a ticket in BJP ,” Banerjee slammed Bose while speaking at a programme.

“If you have the courage, please sign the bill passed in the state assembly to appoint the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of the state-run university,” Banerjee said.

The West Bengal assembly passed a Bill on June 13, 2022 to replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as chancellor of all state-run universities. In July, Dhankhar was appointed as the Vice-President of India. However, the bill was signed by him. The bill is still at Raj Bhawan as CV Anand Bose has not signed it.

The tussle with the state government began with Governor Bose visiting various state-run universities as Chancellor after his appointment, holding meetings with VCs and appointing interim Vice-Chancellors for various university. The Governor even formed a committee and ordered the universities to report to him.

“The rule is that the state government sends three names and the Chancellor chooses from one of them butt is never followed,” Banerjee said. Scoffing at the Governor wearing black sunglasses, Banerjee said, “The governor is wearing black sunglasses. He can wear ten sunglasses but he is bringing one from Kerala and he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor. For becoming VC, at least ten years of academic experience is required for becoming VC. A former IPS was appointed as VC of Aliah University by the Governor,” said Banerjee. “In Jhargram University, there has been no VC for a long time. But if we send him, he will appoint someone as VC that he wants. I have set up several universities but he is acting like an agent and functioning in his own way. He is telling students about corruption,” Banerjee lashed out at the Governor. The bitter rivalry with Dhankhar reached such a height that Mamata Banerjee blocked him on twitter. Bose, a former IPS, did not argue with Banerjee as Dhankhar. Bose expressed his displeasure at the violence during the pre- and post-Panchayat polls, visited various violence-hit areas in the state and even opened a peace-room at the Raj Bahwan, where the people from violence-hit areas can file complaints. The current Governor has even opened an anti-corruption cell and is talking about corruption in the state, especially in relation to the WBSSC recruitment scam.
