An Uber driver allegedly tricked a woman into thinking he was her ride before taking her to a Florida motel, where she “woke up naked” with no memory.
The same driver is now being investigated to see if he has victimized other women.
The suspect, Danny Maurad-Avecillas, 49, was originally arrested and charged with two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and one count of fraudulent possession of identification earlier this month.
He is now facing new sexual assault allegations.
An arrest affidavit obtained by CBS News Miami said the woman’s friend ordered her an Uber from South Beach, Miami on Jan. 12.
The California resident was lured to a car that looked similar to the one she was waiting for and got in.
Instead of going to her Airbnb just a few minutes away, Maurad-Avecillas, 49, drove her over 20 minutes away to Motel 77, the affidavit reportedly said.
The victim spoke during Maurad-Avecillas’ probable cause hearing on Friday, according to Fox affiliate WSVN.
“He made me believe that was my Uber and said, ‘Get in the car, get in the car,’ and that’s it,” the woman said.
“It looked exactly like the car that I was waiting for.”
On the way to the motel, Maurad-Avecillas — who is believed to be a registered Uber driver — allegedly used the victim’s credit card to fill up his gas tank and also used it to pay for the hour-by-hour accommodation, according to the affidavit.
Hours later, the victim “woke up naked” with no recollection of how she got there or what happened to her. Cops said she may have been sexually assaulted.
The victim said in court that she was suffering from bodily injury as a result of the incident.
“I have bodily injury. I don’t know what they did to me. I have bruises,” the woman said.
Miami police are now investigating whether Maurad-Avecillas has victimized other women, the agency said in a press release Saturday.
According to the Miami Police Department, the investigation involves a ride-share driver using a “silver or black SUV” who is suspected of targeting women in the evening hours, waiting for their ride-share, luring them in, intoxicating, robbing and possibly sexually assaulting them.
Uber called the accusations against Maurad-Avecillas “sickening” and said they had removed his license.
“There are no words to describe this sickening behavior,” an Uber spokesperson said. “We removed the driver’s access as soon as this was reported to us and are supporting law enforcement with their investigation.”
